WINE OF VENETO
The region of Veneto has ancient wine tradition and currently represents one of the most important areas of Italy for wine production.
Here, due to morphological features of the region, delicious grapes generally grow, and wineries' aim is to guarantee the development of a high quality and varied production.
The production of wine grapes is one of the major activities aimed to increase the agricultural economy of this region and it has an important role at a national level as well.
The hills surrounding the city of Verona produce the most famous and important wines of the region, such as Bardolino (DOC red, white, novello and spumante), Bianco di Custoza (DOC), Valpolicella and Soave (both of them, thanks to their huge production and diffusion, represent a pillar of Italian oenology in the world). In the family of Valpolicella you can find the Amarone di Valpolicella, considered to be one of the best Italian red wines at international level. Moreover, it is worthy of mention the Recioto di Soave, a delicious sweet wine and first one to obtain the DOCG denomination in Veneto.
In the area of the plains near the Adige river, white wines such as Garganega, Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay and Trebbiano Soave are produced, while on the hills surrounding Vicenza and Padova you can find Merlot, Pinot Nero and Breganze Cabernet as red wines, Tocai, Pinot Bianco and Vespaiolo as white wines.
The area around Venice produces some DOC wines such as Lison Pramaggiore and Vini del Piave.
A very famous DOC sparkling wine in Veneto is the Prosecco of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene and the grappa of Veneto is one of the most appreciated.

Venice, more than other places in Italy, is for sure the city where the culture of wine is perhaps more established. At the beginning of last century the ‘City of the Dogi’ had more that 1200 wine shops and retails and inns. Today, the ‘bàcari’ – the traditional pubs – are still the pivot of much of the social and cultural life of Venice and places of great interest to visit.
