MUSEUMS IN VENICE

SAN MARCO

BIBLIOTECA NAZIONALE MARCIANA AND THE MUSEO CORRER

The Library of St. Mark’s Square is the most important library in Venice and the earliest surviving public manuscript depositorie in Italy. The building was constructed in 1537.

It is also called Biblioteca Marciana, Biblioteca di San Marco, Libreria Marciana, Libreria Sansoviniana, Libreria Vecchia or Libreria di San Marco.
Today it’s placed in the south of St. mark’s Square.

MUSEO CORRER

The Correr Museum has been in the Napoleon area (St. Mark’s Square) since 1922. This part of the Square was designed by Antolini, Giuseppe Soli and Lorenzo Santi. The entry of the museum not only reflects the monumental architecture of the Napoleon period but also the neoclassical style of the Asburgo.

The art collection was donated to Venice by Teodoro Correr in 1830, and today, thanks to more donations, constitutes the main Venetian Civic Museum.
The museum begins with the suggestive Napoelonic Wing, neoclassical Rooms which became the Venetian Royal Palace of the French Emperor, of the Asburgo and of the King of Italy. Here you can find statues and bas-reliefs by Antonio Canova.
Furthermore, you'll find a collection of the Renaissance period (works by Riccio, Roccatagliata, Campagna, Aspetti).

The second floor, has masterpieces of Antonello da Messina, Carpaccio, Bellin and Lotto that are displayed to illustrate the History of Venice during its highest period of glory.
The Museum of Risorgimento, the Museum Library and the Cabinet of Prints and Drawings are associated to the Correr Museum.

It was founded in 1750 by Venetian Senate who wanted to create a school of painting, sculpture and architecture in order to make it similar to the official institutions of Rome, Milan and Bologna.

In 1819 it was formalized as an institution to study art restoration. It had many important teachers like Tiepolo, Hayez, Alberto Viani, Emilio Vedova.
During the Napoleonic Emipire, many Italian works were confiscated and took them to Paris. Many churches and cloisters had the same confiscation act, and their works were taken to France.
