MARKETS IN VENICE
THE MARKET OF RIALTO
Rialto was the main market area and centre of
economical and financial activities. The market was divided in several parts, each part was given a specific name.
They were arranged according to a hierarchical classification that favoured merchants who dealt with the most precious products.
The zone of Rialto is one of the most ancient areas of Venice and it was the first place where people came after they moved from the mainland.
They found there, thanks to the solid ground, a place that was safe from floodings.
Every morning as early as 04:00 a.m., except for Sundays, the Market of Rialto opened its doors. Consisting of two parts, Erbaria and Pescheria, it still reflects today the typical Venetian tradition kept for centuries, and a place where Venetians do their groceries and get together.
Prices of fruit, vegetables and fish are lower than its competitors around the city.
It is also possible to taste some of the traditional Venetian dishes such as "baccala montecato" (stockfish with garlic, parsley and olive oil) and "past e fagioli".
